According to a recent article in the Herald Sun exercise can be effective in treating mild to moderate levels of depression. The deputy CEO of the website Beyond Blue, states that exercising with friends can prevent women from feeling so isolated as well as increasing their overall wellbeing.
The article goes on to say that when 2 groups of women were examined, the ones who met for coffee in comparison to the ones who exercised together had higher rates of post-natal depression.
Now if ever there was a good excuse to catch up with a girlfriend for a good chat and some quick exercise then this is just the thing. I think if there is anything we can do to keep those negative and ever consuming thoughts at bay, then we should plunge into it and really start some gentle exercise with someone we know, rather than always trying to do it alone.
Afterall, for many of us, it is that feeling of isolation and that nobody understands what we are going through and how hard motherhood really is. Many of us have come from a career that we have built up all on our own, only to be tossed out when motherhood comes our way. We soon learn that not only has our career gone, but our body, our self-esteem and our once useful skills in the corportate world also no longer serve us when it comes to changing nappies and dealing with a screaming baby.
We are thrown in at the deep end with nobody there to save us and everybody expecting us to be able to swim quite adequately on our own. Hence, that is where we need to call out to our friends to 'throw us a line' and allow us to lean on them when we can and team up with them for their help and their advice and not their criticism or judgement.
So, if it helps to keep those baby blues and those post-natal nightmares away, then I suggest we all start some taking a briask walk in the outdoors and just ensure we ''winge the whole way. Then at least, we are getting exercise and getting all our frustrations off our chest and hopefully realizing that we are not alone in this whole 'sometimes difficult and tormenting ordeal' called motherhood.
Good luck and try to get moving, so that you can get those endorphins moving as well. |
